Day 3

1 – Initial Thoughts: Class begins with a brief discussion of any initial thoughts the students had throughout their reading experience. The teacher should make sure to clear up any confusion during this time. The teacher should also address any vocabulary words the students still consider challenging even after logging them.

2 – Our Story So Far: At this time, the teacher presents a few questions about the protagonist on a PowerPoint slide and instructs students to get into pairs to discuss them. After talking to their partners for about 5 minutes, the pairs will receive a handout and be asked to identify the main character’s personality traits, his relationships to others, and their initial impressions for an additional 10 minutes. Two additional characters are included but they are optional.

3 – The Theme of Time: Following the character chart, the teacher asks the question “Did anyone notice what happened between chapters 1 and 2?” Students are encouraged to go back and figure this out for a few minutes. Afterwards, the teacher reveals that there was a “time skip” and that there is no chronological order to the story. The teacher should flip to future chapters and emphasize the fact that chapter titles correspond to the main character’s age at the time. Students are then asked if this was deliberate and if so, the reasons why the author decided to present the plot in this way. At this, the teacher tells students to speak to their neighbors about this for a few minutes.

Following this, the teacher should discuss the concept of a “plot device” and the purpose for using “time” as one for the story at hand. This information is provided in the PowerPoint for day three.

4 – Quiet Reading Time: Once discussion is over, students can take the rest of the class hour to read quietly to themselves.

Homework: Chapter 3 and 4 (p. 60-104) of Daytripper. At the end of class, the teacher should remind students to make note of any new vocabulary in their logs, and anything of interest related to these chapters, and the theme of color.

Anticipated Problems and Possible Solutions: Have students write down their initial thoughts if they are hesitant to share them aloud.
